When Is the Next Planet Parade, and How Do You See It?

“Planet parade” is one of the most oversold phrases in skywatching. The headlines promise planets marching across the sky in a neat row; what you actually get is a pre-dawn hunt where a couple of planets are obvious, a couple hug the brightening horizon, and two more never show up without glass. That’s not a knock; a real planet parade is worth setting an alarm for. It just helps to know what you’re walking outside to see. The good news is that you don’t have to wait for a headline: some version of this is running most months, and one is running right now.
The next planet parade is November 12–28, 2026, before dawn. Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Mercury with nothing but your eyes, Uranus in binoculars, and Mars and Jupiter about a degree apart around November 16. Look east 60 to 30 minutes before your local sunrise.
The one after it is late February to mid-March 2027, after sunset — Mars, Jupiter and Saturn in the evening sky, the first in a while you won’t need an alarm for.

What a planet parade actually is
The planets all orbit the Sun in roughly the same flat plane, so from Earth they always sit close to the same line across the sky, called the ecliptic, the same path the Sun and Moon follow. A “planet parade” (astronomers would say a grouping, or an alignment) is just the times when several of them happen to sit on the same side of the Sun from our point of view, so you can catch three, four, or more in one sweep of the sky instead of one here and one there. They are not physically lined up in space, and they don’t form a straight vertical stack; they’re strung along that gentle ecliptic arc. Knowing that is half the battle: you scan along the arc, low in the east climbing toward the south, not straight up.
The honest part most headlines skip: two of the eight planets, Uranus and Neptune, are never naked-eye objects, parade or no parade. They’re always a binocular-and-telescope job. So a “six-planet alignment” is really two easy planets, two horizon challenges, and two that live behind your optics. Set the expectation there and you’ll come away happy.
What’s in the dawn sky right now
Five planets are above the horizon before sunrise through late August and September 2026: three you can find with your eyes, two that need glass. If you came out for the six-planet lineup on August 12 and got beaten by the horizon, the good news is that the hardest one has gotten easier. Jupiter was buried in the twilight that morning. It climbs a little higher every day, and by mid-September it’s a bright, obvious thing sitting well clear of the murk.
Look east and south in the hour before sunrise. Easiest first:

Mercury was the sixth planet in the August lineup, and it’s gone — it dropped into the sunrise around August 20. It comes back in November, and that is the one to circle; see below.
The dark mornings are the good ones. New moon falls on September 11, so roughly September 7–14 gives you a moonless pre-dawn sky — which matters far more for Uranus and Neptune than it does for Jupiter. Positions here are for mid-northern latitudes (think Chicago, Denver, New York); from the southern US the whole arc rides a bit higher, and everything below is easier.

How to see it: what time to look, and where to stand
- Pick your window: 60 to 30 minutes before sunrise. Earlier than that and the low planets haven’t risen; later and the sky is too bright for the faint ones. Look up your local sunrise time and set the alarm for about an hour before it. (For an evening parade, run the same logic backwards: 30 to 60 minutes after sunset.)
- Find an open horizon on the right side. This is the whole game. A rooftop, a beach, a hilltop, or any spot where the skyline is flat and unobstructed. A single row of trees can hide the low planet you got up for — and the low one is usually the whole reason a lineup counts as five or six instead of four.
- Start with the bright ones, then work down. Find the obvious planets first to get your bearings on the ecliptic, then follow that arc down toward the horizon for the hard ones. A sky app pointed at the horizon tells you exactly where along the skyline to watch.
- Bring binoculars. They turn a horizon planet from “maybe” into “there it is,” and they’re the only way you’ll pick up Uranus at all.
What to bring
You can see the easy planets with nothing but an early alarm and a clear horizon. Three things turn a two-planet glance into the full lineup:

When is the next planet parade?
More often than the headlines suggest. There’s some grouping of three or more planets most years, because they’re all riding the same ecliptic and regularly bunch up on one side of the Sun. What varies is how many, how bright, and whether it’s a comfortable evening event or a set-your-alarm dawn one. Two are worth putting in the calendar.
Mid-to-late November 2026, before dawn — the best one of this stretch
This is the lineup to get up for, and it’s brighter than August’s was. Through roughly November 12–28, four planets are up in the morning with nothing but your eyes: Venus, blazing in the southeast at magnitude −4.4 and impossible to mistake for anything else, Jupiter and Mars high overhead, and Mercury making its best morning showing of the season low in the east. Uranus makes five for anyone with binoculars.
Two things land inside that window. Around November 16, Mars and Jupiter close to about a degree apart — near enough to cover with a fingertip at arm’s length, and near enough to fit in the same binocular field. Late February to mid-March 2027, after sunset — no alarm required
Dawn parades ask a lot of you. This one doesn’t. For about three weeks either side of the start of March, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are all in the evening sky at once, strung along the ecliptic from the southwest to the south, with Uranus and Neptune in the same arc for anyone with glass. Jupiter is the brightest of them at magnitude −2.3. New moon falls on March 8, 2027, so the first week of March is both dark and well placed. Find a spot with a flat, unobstructed horizon on that side — the low planets disappear behind even a single row of trees. Scan along the ecliptic arc rather than straight up.

How rare is a planet parade?

What's genuinely uncommon is a grouping where the planets are all bright, all high, and all up at a reasonable hour — most lineups make you trade one of those three. Seeing all seven of the other planets at once is rare and, in practice, always involves two you can only reach with optics.
