Uranus sits at the edge of naked-eye visibility. Opposition falls November 25, 2026, and finding it yourself is the whole point.

Uranus is the last planet you can claim to have seen with your unaided eyes, and only just. At magnitude 5.6 it sits right at the naked-eye limit — visible from a genuinely dark site, to someone who knows exactly where to look, on a night with no Moon. It was cataloged as a star more than twenty times before William Herschel realized in 1781 that it was moving.

That is the appeal. Uranus is not a spectacle. It is a find.

When to look

Uranus reaches opposition on November 25, 2026, at magnitude 5.6 — up all night, highest around midnight, and as close and bright as it gets this year. The weeks either side are just as good; nothing about Uranus changes quickly.

What matters far more than the exact date is the Moon. At this brightness, a gibbous Moon anywhere in the sky washes Uranus out. Pick a night within a few days of new Moon and the job gets dramatically easier.

How to find it

You do not star-hop to Uranus by accident. The reliable method:

  • Get its position from a sky app for your date — Stellarium or SkySafari will show the field.
  • Sweep with binoculars first. In 10×50s Uranus is easy, but it looks exactly like the stars around it. What you are doing is identifying the right dot, not spotting something obvious.
  • Confirm with magnification. Put a telescope on the candidate at 100× or more. Stars stay points no matter how much you magnify them. Uranus resolves into a tiny disc — and that is the moment you know.
  • Check the color. Once you have the disc, the blue-green is unmistakable and slightly startling against the white stars nearby.

An honest alternative: sketch the field, come back two weeks later, and see which dot moved. That is exactly what Herschel did, and it is the most satisfying way to do it.

Nobody looks at Uranus twice for the view. They look because they found it.

What telescope you need

Less than you think, and more magnification than you expect. Around 90mm is enough to show the disc, but only if you push past 100× — at low power Uranus is just another dot and you will walk straight past it.

This is the one target in the cluster where a decent high-power eyepiece matters more than the telescope, because resolving a tiny disc from a point is entirely a magnification problem.

Get proof you saw it

Sketch the field with Uranus marked, note the date, and come back a fortnight later. The dot will have shifted against the background stars. That drift is what turned a cataloged star into the first planet discovered in recorded history — and you can repeat the discovery from a garden chair.
