How to See Venus
Venus is the brightest thing in the sky after the Sun and Moon, and a small telescope shows what Galileo saw: it has phases.

You have already seen Venus. It is the thing you noticed hanging over the sunset and assumed was a plane, because it was too bright and too steady to be a star. It outshines everything in the night sky except the Moon.
What a telescope adds is stranger than you would expect: Venus is not a disc. It is a phase. That single observation, made by Galileo in 1610, is what broke the idea that everything orbits the Earth — a body showing a full set of phases has to be circling the Sun.
When to look
Venus never strays far from the Sun, so it is always an evening or a morning object, never overhead at midnight. The good windows are its greatest elongations, when it stands farthest from the Sun in our sky.
Venus reached greatest eastern elongation on August 14–15, 2026 — its best evening-star showing of this apparition. Look west after sunset. It then swings back toward the Sun through the autumn before reappearing in the morning sky, reaching greatest western elongation on January 3, 2027, at 47° from the Sun. That January window is the one to plan for if you miss the evening run.

That last row is the honest bit. Venus is the one planet where a bigger telescope adds almost nothing. There is nothing to resolve: an unbroken layer of sulfuric-acid cloud hides the surface completely.
Bright, and awkward about it
Venus is so bright that in a dark sky it glares and swims, and the phase is harder to see, not easier. Two fixes, both free:
- Observe in twilight. Catch Venus while the sky is still deep blue rather than black. The reduced contrast tames the glare and the phase sharpens noticeably. This is the single best trick for Venus, and it is the opposite of the usual advice.
- Cut the light. A neutral-density or light-blue filter takes the edge off. So does simply stopping the aperture down, which costs nothing on many scopes.
The phase and the size also trade off against each other. Near greatest elongation Venus shows a crisp half-disc. As it swings toward us the disc grows much larger while the lit fraction shrinks to a thin crescent — and that big thin crescent, low in the twilight, is the view worth waiting for.
What telescope you need
Almost anything. Venus is the most forgiving target in this whole cluster: a 60mm refractor at 50× shows the phase clearly, and no amount of extra aperture reveals more. If you own a telescope at all, it is enough.
One safety line that matters. Venus is sometimes close to the Sun in the sky, and hunting for it in daylight or bright twilight puts the Sun near your field of view. Never sweep for Venus while the Sun is above the horizon unless you know exactly what you are doing. Wait until the Sun has set.

Get proof you saw it
Sketch the phase, with the date. Do it once a month for a few months. The shape will march from gibbous through half to crescent while the disc grows — and you will have repeated, by eye, the observation that dismantled the Earth-centred universe.
It is the single most consequential thing a small telescope can show you, and it takes about thirty seconds to see.
