Screw a good filter onto an eyepiece and the sky changes character. The full Moon stops blasting your eye and settles into crisp gray craters. The faint smudge you could barely see under city lights — the Orion Nebula — darkens its background and lifts into a shape. A $20–45 piece of glass does that. It’s the highest bang-for-buck accessory in astronomy after a second eyepiece.

But filters are also where a lot of money gets wasted on the wrong glass and on promises no filter can keep. Here’s what actually earns a spot in the case, by the job you’re trying to do.

What a filter can and can’t do

Start with the honest limit, because it saves money: no filter adds light. Every filter works by blocking some wavelengths so the ones you want stand out. That’s why they’re brilliant on the Moon (too much light) and on emission nebulae (which glow at specific wavelengths a filter can isolate), and why they do almost nothing for galaxies and star clusters, which shine across the whole spectrum. A “light-pollution” filter also can’t rescue a truly bright sky — under modern white LED streetlights especially, it helps most at moderately dark sites, not downtown. Buy for the Moon, planets, and emission nebulae; keep your expectations modest for everything else.

The one filter to own if you own one — Baader Neodymium Moon & Skyglow

Around $100–110. If you buy a single filter, buy this one. The German-made Baader Neodymium (Moon & Skyglow) uses a special glass that does three jobs at once: it knocks down the Moon’s glare, cuts the orange skyglow from streetlights, and sharpens planetary contrast so Jupiter’s belts and Mars’s dark markings pop. Best for nebulae from the city — Celestron 94123 UHC

Around $70–95. A UHC (ultra-high-contrast) filter is the single biggest deep-sky upgrade for anyone stuck under suburban skies. It passes the narrow bands where emission nebulae glow and blocks nearly everything else, so the background sky goes darker and the nebula lifts out of it — the Orion Nebula gains structure, the Lagoon and Swan become obvious. For planetary nebulae — Celestron OIII 93623

Around $85–100. An OIII filter is the UHC’s narrower cousin: it isolates just the doubly-ionized oxygen lines where certain nebulae glow, dropping the sky background almost to black. That makes it the specialist for planetary nebulae (the Ring, the Dumbbell) and for the Veil, which can go from invisible to obvious the moment you thread it on. It’s deliberately aggressive, so it does little for broadband targets and isn’t the filter to buy first — but once you’re hunting the objects it’s built for, nothing at this price touches it. Around $15–20. A full Moon at the eyepiece is dazzling — bright enough to leave an afterimage. This neutral-density filter drops it to about 18% brightness, which sounds drastic but simply lets your eye relax so craters and rilles snap into detail. It’s the cheapest filter here and the one that makes lunar observing pleasant instead of squinty. Dial the brightness in — Celestron Variable Polarizing

Around $40–50. The fixed Moon filter above drops you to one brightness (~18%). A variable polarizing filter gives you a dial instead: two polarizing elements you rotate against each other to set transmission anywhere from about 1% to 40%. A crescent Moon and a blazing full Moon need very different amounts of dimming, and this lets you match it by eye. It also tames a dazzlingly bright Venus. If the Moon is a regular target and you’d rather tune the view than live with one setting, spend the extra over the plain neutral-density filter. Check price ▸

For planetary detail — Baader 6-Color Set

Around $280–315. Color filters each reveal different planetary features: a blue filter sharpens Jupiter’s cloud belts, a red one darkens Mars’s surface markings, a yellow one adds lunar contrast. The German-made Baader Premium six-filter set is a real step up from the stamped color glass in bargain kits, with the largest clear aperture in its class so it won’t vignette. 1.25″ or 2″? Match your eyepieces

Filters thread onto the bottom of an eyepiece barrel, so buy the size that matches your eyepieces. Most beginner and mid-range eyepieces are 1.25″ — the size every pick above comes in. If you’ve moved to wide-field 2″ eyepieces, buy the 2″ version of the same filter (they exist for the Celestron and Baader picks) so you can use it in your widest views. When in doubt, 1.25″ is the safe default.

What to skip

The $15 “colored filter kits” of thin stamped glass — they soften the image more than they help. Any filter sold as a cure for severe downtown light pollution, especially for astrophotography under LED streetlights, where the old broadband tricks barely work. And “moon & planetary” no-name filters with no stated specs. Spend a little more on one good filter that does a job than a bagful that don’t.
