Alt-az, GoTo, tracker, or equatorial?

Match the mount to the goal. For visual only, a smooth alt-az (or a GoTo alt-az like the AZ-GTi) is all you need — point, look, done. What to skip

The wobbly aluminum tripod-and-mount that ships with a cheap department-store telescope — it’s the real reason those scopes disappoint. Any equatorial mount loaded near its rated payload for imaging (halve the number for astrophotography). And “GoTo” mounts so light they can’t hold the scope still enough to actually see what they point at. Spend on the mount; it outlasts every scope you’ll put on it.
