The Sky Calendar

Every sky event we track — 12 meteor-shower peaks, 15 eclipses, planet oppositions, solstices and equinoxes, 2026 through 2030 — as a calendar feed you subscribe to once. Each event lands in your own calendar on its date with the viewing window, the expected rate, and a link to our how-to for that night. When the data changes, the feed updates itself. It is the same source the sky tonight, meteor shower and eclipse guides are built from, so it can never disagree with them.

• Google Calendar: on a computer, open Google Calendar → the + next to “Other calendars” → From URL → paste the feed address. Google refreshes subscribed feeds about once a day.
• Apple Calendar (Mac, iPhone, iPad): File → New Calendar Subscription on a Mac, or Settings → Calendar → Accounts → Add Subscribed Calendar on iOS, and paste the address. Or simply tap the button above.
• Outlook: Add calendar → Subscribe from web, paste the address, name it.

Subscribing keeps the calendar live. Downloading the file instead gives you a one-time import that will not update, which is fine for a club newsletter or a classroom handout.

The events are public astronomy; what we maintain — and what is licensed here under CC BY 4.0, free to reuse with a link back — is the selection, the dating, the plain-English notes and the upkeep. Astronomy clubs, libraries, science teachers and newsletters are welcome to republish the calendar, embed the feed, or copy the table, with credit.

What’s in the file

Three files, regenerated together from one source on every deploy:

• sky-calendar.ics — the subscribable iCalendar feed: one all-day event per sky event, stable IDs so updates replace rather than duplicate.
• sky-events.json — a JSON object with a short header (name, license, basis, modified date) and an events array: date, kind, name, viewing window, expected rate, note, and the how-to URL.
• sky-events.csv — the same events as a spreadsheet-ready table.

Where the dates come from

Meteor-shower peak nights are the widely published maxima — they shift by about a day from year to year and the peak is a range, which is why each entry carries its window as well as its date. Eclipse dates, solstices and equinoxes are computed astronomy, fixed decades ahead; eclipse visibility is the broad region, so check a detailed map before travelling. Planet oppositions are the published ephemeris dates. Each event links to the guide that explains how to see it, and the eclipse guide carries every eclipse’s own source.

Updates

The feed and both data files are rebuilt from the same source as the sky pages on every deploy, so they never drift from the site. They currently carry 34 events, 2026–2030; new showers, eclipses and oppositions are added as the calendar rolls forward, and subscribed calendars pick them up automatically.
