For twenty-five years, every private citizen who reached orbit went to the same address: the International Space Station, a government outpost that rents a few visitor seats a year. Haven-1 is the first serious attempt to build somewhere else to go — a small, privately owned station that answers to a company, not a space agency. It won’t be large, and it won’t be first by much if rivals move fast, but if it launches on schedule it will be the first commercial station flying on its own in orbit rather than bolted to the ISS.

What Haven-1 actually is

Haven-1 is deliberately modest. It is a single module that launches to orbit fully built on one Falcon 9, with no assembly required once it is up there — a sharp contrast to the ISS, which took dozens of flights and years to construct. It stands roughly 10 meters tall with about 45 cubic meters of habitable space, and it flies in a ~425 km orbit inclined at 51.6 degrees, the same orbit the ISS uses.

Crews reach it aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon, which stays docked for the whole visit and provides life support — Haven-1 itself is not built to run for long stretches on its own. Over a design life of about three years, Vast plans on the order of four short crewed missions. This is a proving ground, not a hotel: a first station to demonstrate the business before the much larger Haven-2 that follows.

When does Haven-1 launch?

The honest answer is later than first promised. Vast originally aimed for a 2026 launch, but in early 2026 the company pushed the target to Q1 2027 or later, citing the time needed to finish integrating the station’s systems and to clear the safety-verification milestones SpaceX requires before a crewed Dragon can dock. The Vast-1 mission and who flies it

Once Haven-1 is in orbit, the first crewed flight — Vast-1 — launches four private astronauts to it on a Crew Dragon for a stay of no more than 30 days. As of mid-2026 most of the crew is still to be announced; the one named member is Arnaud Prost, a flight-test engineer in ESA’s reserve astronaut pool, on what would be his first spaceflight. NASA has also selected Vast for a later private astronaut mission, and national agencies including France and the UK have signed up for seats — a sign that the early customers are as much governments and researchers as wealthy individuals. Why the first commercial station matters

This is the part that reaches beyond one company. The ISS is scheduled to retire around 2030 and be deorbited, and NASA has decided not to build another government station to replace it. Instead it is backing several privately owned stations and planning to buy visits the way it buys rides today. That policy is what turns a niche of a few orbital-tourist seats a year into a potential market — more destinations mean more crews, more flights, and, eventually, lower prices.
