The Heritage 130’s case: more scope for less, and it folds away

The Heritage 130’s argument is simple: you get the same 130 mm view for roughly a hundred dollars less, in a body that collapses to store in a closet and sets up in seconds. It’s a tabletop Dobsonian — a tube on a little rotating base — so you point it by hand, which is the most intuitive way there is to learn the sky. The honest catches are two. You supply the surface: a table, stool, or crate to lift it to eye level, since it doesn’t come on a tripod. And you find targets yourself by star-hopping, which is a real skill — the first week is a learning curve. That curve is the thing the StarSense app removes, and whether it’s worth paying to remove is the whole decision. Worth knowing: a free planetarium app like Stellarium or SkySafari on your phone gives you most of the “where is it” help for nothing — it just won’t dock to the scope and draw live arrows the way StarSense does.

The DX 130AZ takes the single hardest part of early astronomy — finding a faint object you’ve never seen — and turns it into a game you win. Dock your phone in the cradle, open the StarSense app, pick a target, and follow the on-screen arrows until they turn green; there’s Jupiter, centered. It’s not a motorized GoTo scope — you still do the moving — but the app tells you exactly where to move, and for a true beginner that removes the frustration that ends more hobbies than bad optics ever do. It also stands on a full-height altazimuth tripod, so there’s no table to find and no stooping. If you already know that hunting blindly for a smudge in the dark would end with the scope in a closet, the StarSense app is worth every dollar; it’s the difference between a telescope you use and one you regret. Frequently Asked Questions

Do the StarSense DX 130AZ and Heritage 130 show the same thing?

Essentially yes. That's the trade for its low price and its collapsible, closet-sized body. The StarSense DX 130AZ, by contrast, includes a full-height tripod and stands on the floor on its own.

Are these motorized GoTo telescopes?

Neither one is. Both are manual — you move the scope to the target by hand and nudge it back as Earth's rotation carries the object out of view. The StarSense DX 130AZ's app tells you exactly where to point, but it does not motor the scope for you.
