If you just want the answer
- Buy the Homestar Original (~$140–160) if you have an ordinary bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling and you can get it dark. It is the same mapped sky as the Flux, projected by a dimmer lamp across a smaller circle, and in that room you will not miss the difference.
- Buy the Homestar Flux (~$200–260) if your ceiling is high, your room is big, or a streetlight gets in. The 5-watt lamp and the glass optics are the whole product: more light, and star points that stay sharp out at the edges instead of smearing.
- Buy the Homestar Matataki (~$100–130) if the machine’s job is to help someone fall asleep. It is the only one whose stars twinkle, it plays its own soundscapes, and it runs off USB — the cheapest door into a real Homestar, and the best one for the last hour of the day.
What all three share
This is the part that decides most of the purchase, and it’s the part the price tags hide: all three are the same kind of machine. Every Homestar projects through an optical disc — a physical plate with the stars plotted on it, sent through a lens — rather than the pinhole-and-bulb trick cheap night lights use. That is why the constellations land where they belong instead of scattering like glitter.
The pedigree behind that is worth knowing, because it explains why a toy company’s bedroom gadget is astronomically sound. Sega’s own Homestar site credits the line’s development to planetarium creator Takayuki Ohira, the engineer behind MEGASTAR — the professional projectors installed in science museums, one of which was recognised by Guinness World Records in 2004 for projecting over a million stars. Homestar inherits the same star-plate approach, scaled down to a sphere that sits on a nightstand. Sega dates the first machine to 2005 and describes it as the first home planetarium to use optical projection rather than pinholes.
Practically, that shared ancestry means all three give you: a disc you can swap, a shooting-star function, a slow rotation mode that turns the whole sky the way the night actually turns, and a sleep timer. None of that is what you are paying the extra money for.

Where the Flux wins
Two things, and they are physical rather than featural. Light, and edges.
The lamp goes from 3 watts to 5. That sounds like a spec-sheet detail and behaves like a different product, because a projected sky doesn’t dim gracefully — it dies at the faint end. The bright stars stay put; the thousands of dim ones that give a sky its depth are the first thing to wash out when the lamp is small, the ceiling is far away, or a sliver of light gets past the curtains. Push the throw distance up and the same light spreads over a much bigger circle, which is why ceiling height matters more here than room size.
The second thing is glass. Sega lists glass optics on the Flux alone, and glass is what keeps a star a point instead of a smudge out at the rim of the projection. On a small ceiling circle you will barely see it. On a big one, the difference between a crisp field and a soft one is the difference between looking at the sky and looking at a lamp.

Where the Original wins
The Original is the direct descendant of the machine that started all of this, and it is still in production for a reason. It projects the same 60,000-star field across roughly a nine-foot circle of ceiling, turns that field slowly the way the night turns, drops the occasional shooting star, and shuts itself off on a timer once you’ve stopped watching. It ships with two northern-hemisphere discs — one plain sky, one with the constellation lines drawn in, which is genuinely the best way to learn what you’re looking at.
Put it in an ordinary bedroom with a normal ceiling and a decent blackout curtain, and it does the thing you bought a home planetarium to do. The concessions are real but narrow: it runs from an AC adapter with no power-bank option, and its 3-watt lamp is the ceiling on how big a room it can fill. Where the Matataki wins
Matataki means twinkle, and that is the entire pitch. A second effect plate sits under the star disc and ripples the field, so the stars shimmer the way the real atmosphere makes them shimmer — the only Homestar that does it. Run it that way and you get 10,000 twinkling stars; swap to the solid disc and it puts up 60,000 like its siblings. A speaker plays its own nature soundscapes, there’s a shooting-star function and a timer, and it runs off USB, so a power bank works as well as a wall socket.

Match it to your ceiling, not your budget
The cleanest way through this decision has nothing to do with which model sounds nicest.
- Measure the throw. Standard 8-foot bedroom ceiling, projector on a nightstand? Any of the three fills it. Vaulted ceiling, a loft, a living room where the unit sits ten or twelve feet from the surface? That is Flux territory, and the Original will look thin there.
- Be honest about the dark. A projected sky is a faint image, and every stray photon eats the dim stars first. If the room has a streetlight, a hallway glow or a bright standby LED you can’t defeat, buy the extra watts. If you can get it properly black, you don’t need them.
- Ask what it’s for. Learning the constellations from bed rewards accuracy and light — Flux or Original. Falling asleep rewards twinkle and sound — Matataki. Nobody has ever regretted matching the machine to the job.
The mistake worth avoiding
Buying the Flux expecting a light show. It projects white points on black, on purpose, because that is what the sky looks like. People who wanted the sky love it for exactly that; people who wanted colour and drama find it plain and feel they overpaid at the top of the range.
